For my NaNoWriMo writing space I found a fancy schmancy curtain, and check out that awesome clock! Oh, and don’t forget my owl pictures. 🙂
Now in no way do I consider my writing play, but compared to my “real life” jobs that actually pay the bills, I have to think along those lines sometimes.
As I am getting my manuscript ready to go out to agents all I want to do is stay at home and write. It’s my passion and I love doing it. It makes me happy and I get excited just thinking about it.
But then the real world interferes with these plans throwing in timed schedules, work hours and family obligations. I love spending time with my family and they know how important my writing is to me and they give me the time needed to get some work done, but my “job” which has lost all of its luster, waits for me, like a bad headache, to monopolize all my time.
Which makes finding time to write so precious. Find it when you can. If you need peace and quiet lock yourself in your room or office if you’re lucky enough to have one. Wait until the kids to go school and let the housework and laundry sit for a few hours. Don’t let the distractions of a clean and orderly life keep you from finding time to write.
That used to be my excuse, but not anymore. Even if it’s only half an hour or fifteen minutes, getting anything down on paper will keep the creative juices flowing.
Right now I have an hour to write before I go to work so off I go…
It’s getting close! Eleven more days until the Surrey International Writers Conference gets underway. I’m very excited. My pitch is ready to go and my chapter revisions are coming together nicely.
There is a lot to do to prepare for such an event. Manuscripts to polish and print off, research on the editor/agent you plan to see, questions written down for the blue pencil. A list of things to bring such as a tape recorder, batteries, lots of pens and paper, business cards if you have any, your pitch… oh the list can go on and on but I’ll stop there.
Right now I would describe myself as excitedly nervous. Does that make sense?
I still have a lot to do to get ready so I’ll end this blog here for now and let you know how my preparations are going. 🙂
Well, I’ve finally had some free time where I can organize my writing space. I just finished reading a post about how important it is to have your own personal space to create. My space was a corner of the living room that seemed to collect everyone’s junk and became more of a decoration than an actual writing spot. All the distractions of a living room – TV, X-box, phone, etc., became too much.
So, yesterday I took on the project of cleaning our office (which is where my husband works) but I was able to carve out a little corner for myself and I must say it looks quite cozy. Of course, I won’t be working in there when he is, but as I do most of my writing at night it will work fine as he will be in the living room.
I haven’t sat down to see if it will actually inspire me, but I am more than willing to give it a try. 🙂
Ok, I promised a schedule… so here it goes.
Ask yourself a few questions first, such as, what time of the day do you like to write? When do you feel the most inspired and creative? Do you have a quiet place to work? For me, it’s in the evenings. Now that life at my house has calmed down a bit, I can make some time and actually stick to it.
Monday – 7:00-9:00 (of course this doesn’t have to be a permanent time, but if something comes up hopefully you put some time in).
Tuesday – no, band practice.
Wednesday – 7:00-9:00
Thursday – 8:00-9:00
Friday – 7:00-9:00
Saturday/Sunday – at my own discretion, depending on what the family is doing. Again, later in the evening for me.
So sit down with your daily schedule and be very detailed about what you do on a regular day. That will be the only way to squeeze in the time needed to work on your creation – no more procrastination allowed! Even if it’s only one sentence, it’s better than nothing.
Be accountable to someone – even your husband/wife and kids. Tell them this is your time and make it a part of the family’s regular routine.
Well, I decided that no serious writing is going to get done if I don’t clear away all the clutter from my small little writing desk. I have started to file and organize some important papers I forgot I had, and VOILA! my mind suddenly feels less cluttered as well.
Next I am going to organize my days leading up to the conference to make sure I get in at least 1-2 hours of writing time done each day. I will be making a schedule tomorrow which I will share with you. I feel it’s important to be accountable to someone in order to motivate and encourage positive action.
Well, I did it! I am officially registered for the SiWC. What a relief! My feelings of anxiety have turned into a cloud of calm as the realization sinks in and I can sit back and get my work done.
What I found different with this registration compared to last year is that you actually got to pick the time you want to have your pitch and blue pencil sessions. Of course, that is what took the longest – because all the workshops will be excellent and I didn’t know which one to pick to leave in the middle of and miss some valuable information. That’s why handouts are great or having a friend there with you to record everything.
I love lists, they keep me organized. Without them I would be lost. My current list involves my writing. As mentioned earlier, my writing group is catching up to where I have left off which is wonderful incentive to get my butt in gear and start writing. My characters are never far from my mind and I am always thinking of what predicament to put them in next. I also have to get my short story ready for the Surrey Writers Conference, and for my next newspaper/magazine effort.
A good spring cleaning of my writing desk and I’m off to the races.
It must be spring because I am really excited about this! 🙂
